THE CATHEDRAL

The construction of the Lund Cathedral was begun around 1100 A.D. and for a long time it was the seat of Europe's largest archdiocese. The oldest preserved part of the cathedral is considered the best example of romanesque construction in Scandinavia. With its impressive, special double towers, the Cathedral is one of Sweden's most well-visited tourist sights. Most popular of all attractions is the big astrological clock, the "Horologium Mirabile Lundense", which plays every day at noon and 3 p.m. (Sundays and holidays 1 and 3 p.m.). There are guided tours in Swedish and in English. See the schedule of events for the times. The Cathedral is open every day from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

KULTUREN is Lund's answer to Stockholm's Skansen. The Cultural-Historical Museum in Lund is never called anything else but Kulturen by those in the know. The large open air museum in the middle of the town is a living piece of urban history with buildings from the 17th century and upwards. The typical low houses from the 19th century which are preserved on Kulturen's grounds are just like those in the area immediately surrounding Kulturen, making the transition from museum to town life barely noticeable. There are many impressive collections at Kulturen; furthermore, during the summer, there are many different exhibitions, musical events, guided tours, pony-riding etc. Kulturen is open daily 11 a.m. -5p.m., closed on Midsummer.

UNIVERSITY is now Scandinavia's largest with 23 000 students taking courses offered by 170 departments. The university was founded in 1668 to instil a Swedish identity in the territories taken over ten years earlier from the Danes. The medieval city with its spread-out campus is a delightful place to spend a few academic years in. Summer university for foreign students is available but be careful - the lovely beaches of Skanör, Falsterbo, Tylösand, Båstad and Torekov are dangerously close by.

FALSTAFF FAKIR was the pen-name Axel Wallengren (18651896) used for his satirical bohemian student books like "The Happiness Lexicon" and "Your Own Professor". In the tradition of Mark Twain and the popular student satirical plays he joked with all aspects of life before taking his own. Fritiof Nilsson "the Pirate"'s (1895-1972) first books were almost as burlesque as Wallengren's but his writing took many different turns from the funny "Bombi Bitt and I" to the tragic "The Bookseller who stopped bathing". He died as one of Sweden's most popular authors. The inscription on his grave reads: "Here lie the ashes of a man who always procastrinated. He finally improve and really died on January 31, 1972".

TETRA PAK started as a bright idea in a Lund kitchen. Ruben Rausing of the packaging giant Akerlund & Rausing had experimented with unbreakable milk packages when his wife suggested "Why don't you fill the milk all the way up to the next package continuously and then seal it off with the milk itself, in the same way as we do when we make Christmas sausage from the filled casing?" The result was the first Tetra Standard package and the founding of Tetra Pak which today is the leader in aseptic packaging worldwide. Tetra Pak has, just bought Alfa Laval which also had extensive manufacturing facilities just outside Lund. Ruben Rausing's partner Holger Crafoord went on to found G a m b r o , another Lund company, and the world's largest manufacturer of artificial kidneys. A new industrial estate has recently been established in Lund. IDEON is a silicon valley type of complex where more than 100 companies are now established.
