Day 38 - Detroit Lakes

Although the Detroit Lakes area was more heavily settled by Norwegians, Swedes organized in 1871 and built the white-frame Upsala Lutheran Church in 1876 in an attractive rural setting. The church was closed in 1964, but a Midsummer service is held every year. In the trees to the east is the church cemetery.

Ten miles northeast of Detroit Lakes is Lund Lutheran Church, Route 2 (218-847-9662), constructed in 1903, and its cemetery. The congregation was founded in 1884. The attractive red-brick Eksjo Lutheran Church (218-238-5762), four miles west of Lake Park, has a cornerstone noting "Sw. Ev. Luth. Church of Eksjo Ad 1901." There is an adjacent cemetery.
