Day 41 - Kerrick
The Louis Hultgren House, on State Highway 23 southwest of the business district, was built in the mid-1890s. Hultgren was born in Sweden in 1863 and immigrated to the United States twenty-five years later. When Kerrick was a logging town on the recently constructed Eastern Minnesota Railroad line, Hultgren discovered fine molding sand south of town while working for the railroad. In 1892 he bought the land, began extracting the molding sand, and started a Pine County industry that supplied foundries as far away as central Canada. The house is now a private residence.
