Around Swedish America in 548 Days

Day 68 - Franconia

Franconia Historic District is on the flat land of the St. Croix River bottom, three miles south of Taylors Falls. During its most prosperous years in the 1870s, it was in the center of a timber area with extensive river traffic. The historic district, bounded by Cornelian, Summer, and Henry Streets, includes ten frame residences, seven of which were built between the 1850s and the 1880s. At least four of the houses—the Eric Ostrom, Jonas Lindall, Hans Hanson, and Olof Swanlund homes—are closely associated with early Swedish settlers. A stone monument honors its pioneers.
